Post-colonial Africa was rife with military coups, but many countries returned to democracy in the 1980s and 1990s. A new wave of coups of late has turned the clock back. A break-out of hostilities in Sudan has pushed the country on to a slippery slope of uncertainty. What will be the impact on its neighbours and the rest of Africa?
