Hydrogen can paint steelmaking green, but cost, viability hurt: why Tata, JSW are still on the fence

In India, steel companies account for 10%-11% of emissions compared with 7%-9% worldwide. While making steel using hydrogen can cut carbon footprint, the method is yet to find takers here. For producing crude steel, the sustainable way costs USD500/tonne against USD200 the legacy way. Prices of hydrogen must fall under USD1-USD1.5 per kg from USD6-USD7 for it to become mainstream.
